Bacteria has become a bad word in the English language. We all try hard to keep ourselves healthy by keeping harmful bacteria from growing in our food. But, did you know there are beneficial bacteria strains that have been encouraged to grow and thrive on foods for generations? This process, called fermentation, leads to improved digestion and therefore overall health. Yogurt , kombucha , sauerkraut, kim chi, miso and tempeh are some of the most common fermented foods that are readily available to us.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Nine Stars Ranch, just outside of Wilsonville, Oregon. Nine Stars Ranch is the largest grower of kiwi berries in the US! Kiwi berries are native to Asia, and all of the fruit at one time was being grown and shipped overseas to Japan. Kiwi berry season is here, we are lucky to now have this locally grown super food in stock!
Nine Stars Ranch has been been producing kiwi berries for 15 years. They have been selling their produce to Organically Grown Company for the last 5 years. The kiwi plants cover 12 acres of land, with 180 plants, and more being planted every year.
Kiwi berries and the standard fuzzy kiwi are very different. Kiwi berries are about the size of a grape, and have a smooth skin. Kiwi berries are meant to be eaten whole, no fuzzy skin to peel. They are also not as acidic as the fuzzy kiwis, and tend to be a lot sweeter than fuzzy kiwis when they are ripe. Kiwi berries are at their ripest when they are soft. Color does not matter when selecting ripe kiwi berries, the red that occurs on them is just from their exposure to direct sunlight.
Kiwi Berries are a powerhouse of nutrition! Packed full of vitamins, minerals, and enough antioxidant properties to put them in the super food category! Kiwi berries are a great source of vitamins A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, folate, beta carotene, lutein, and xanthophylls. To Top it off pound for pound kiwi berries have more potassium than a banana, twice the vitamin E of an avocado, and five times the vitamin C content of an orange!
Kiwi berries are available to us for short time in the fall. With supplies being limited, they are definitely worth trying while they are in stock!
