Meet Mano a Mano Family Center in Salem-Keizer
The oldest Latino-led community organization in Salem-Keizer, Mano a Mano Family Center was established in 1988. Mano a Mano has a mission to reduce toxic stress and promote hope and resilience. Mano a Mano Family Center (in Spanish, El Centro Familiar Mano a Mano) helped more than 4,800 families in 2024 with access to services in times of need. They develop social connections, increase knowledge of parenting and child and youth development, and advocate for equity and social inclusion. Mano a Mano provides safe spaces for peers and neighbors to come together to learn, share, and build a healthy community.
Programs That Support Local Families and Youth
Mano a Mano’s team and leadership come from the same communities that the organization serves and represents. Mano a Mano’s projects include:
- The Family Wellness Program, making connections to concrete assistance in times of need and crisis, and supporting the development of positive social connections.
- The Casa Infantil, strengthening families through classes, family playtime, peer support, and parenting education.
- The Youth Empowerment Program, helping youth remove barriers in their lives in order to graduate, find stable employment, and thrive.
- Cafecitos (“little cafés”), which are neighborhood-based groups helping develop positive social connections with peers, and providing a platform for neighbors to engage with community decision-makers. These cafecitos are often facilitated or supported by traditional health workers.
They will also be anchoring a new community hub in Northeast Salem, providing physical space for community programs, classes, and more, at the former Holy Cross Lutheran Church property.

This September, all of our Bag Credit Donations will go directly to Mano a Mano.
How to Donate Your Reusable Bag and Bulk Container Credits
LifeSource credits you 10¢ for each reusable bag you use, and 5¢ for each reusable bulk container. You can keep that credit if you want, or you can choose to direct it to the local nonprofit we’ve selected for the month. This month, it’s Mano a Mano.
How Much Do LifeSource Shoppers Donate Each Month?
It depends how much our customers have allocated in Bag Credit Donations! But those nickels and dimes add up. In August, for example, we donated $846 to Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action. As soon as we’ve calculated the previous month’s total, we’ll post it on the big screen above the checkout lanes at the front of the store.
