Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm

Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm

The average age for a farmer in the United States is almost 60. People under the age of 35 make up less than 5% of all farmers. Getting a new generation excited about farming and equipped with the skills and resources they need to succeed will be critical to feeding the country in the years and decades ahead.

That’s one reason why it’s so exciting that Salem has the Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm, an urban farm and educational site dedicated to cultivating “a new generation of leaders by engaging young people in farming for the community.”

This February, your LifeSource bag credit donations will support the Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm. How does our bag credit donation work? When you bring in your reusable bag for your groceries we’ll give you 10¢ back for each one (5¢ for each reusable produce or bulk container). You can choose to pocket that change, or donate it to this month’s donation recipient. All those dimes add up quickly!

Youth Farm Program Website

The Youth Farm’s program for youth ages 13-18 runs for almost the entire year. Participants learn to tend more than 40 types of fruits and vegetables using organic methods. They learn not only how to grow food, but also how to cooperatively manage a small business and develop their leadership skills. The 6-acre farm, located on Chemeketa Community College’s northeast Salem campus, contains an orchard, production fields, and a learning garden. The food harvested is distributed to food pantries, clinics, and the youth farmers and their families.

If you’re 13-18 years old and interested in becoming part of the Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm, sign up for their farm crew training, coming up in March! The training is free and a vegetarian lunch is provided, and is a requirement to be eligible for the summer farm crew.
