Shop Bulk at LifeSource!
Yes, you can use your own container in our Bulk and Produce departments!
Using your own glass, metal, plastic, or cloth container in the LifeSource Bulk Department can help reduce waste. Even when packaging is recyclable, recycling uses energy, water, and other resources. While some materials, like glass, steel, and aluminum, are nearly infinitely recyclable, plastic polymers rapidly degrade in quality and usefulness when recycled.
The solution? Buying foods and cleaning supplies in bulk, and using your own containers!
You can shop bulk with your own containers. Use the same jars, tubs, and canisters over and over again to refill bulk food at LifeSource. There are just a few simple steps to follow:
- Bring your container. Your container should be clean and in good condition, not rusted, chipped, or cracked. If it has a barcode, block it out with a sticker or permanent marker.
- Take your empty container to a cashier before filling it. Your cashier will mark the container with its tare weight (the weight of the empty container), using the certified scales at our registers.
- Fill your container. If you need help, please ask! We have funnels and other resources that may make things easier for you.
- Mark your container with the bin number.
- Pay at the register.

You Choose: Donation or Bag Credit?
We want to thank you for choosing to reuse your container, so when you check out, we offer you 5¢ for each container you’ve reused. You can decide whether you’d like this amount discounted from your purchase total, or donated to a local nonprofit. The recipient of these donations changes each month!
Can I use my container in produce too?
You can use your own container in our Bulk department, and in our Produce department, too! While you might not use a jar for produce, you’re welcome to use a cotton or mesh bag, for example. But you can’t use your own container for our Hot Bar and Salad Bar: regulations would require us to serve you, which would be quite expensive and also lead to long wait times; instead, we have compostable containers.
Still have questions about how to use your own containers for bulk? Feel free to ask, and watch this video for a quick tour of the department. We’re happy to help you figure it out!
